Somebody new starts

They read what the company is for before anybody asks them for anything.

The steps

  • Step 1 — Their manager tells them what the department is for, in one sentence, on the first day — their manager
  • Step 2 — They read the company's vision, its values and where it is going, before any goal is put to them — the new joiner
  • Step 3 — They meet the person whose work arrives on their desk, and the person whose desk their work arrives on — their manager
  • Step 4 — Nothing is measured in the first month — the first month is for learning what the measure would even mean — their manager

What we never do

Handing somebody a target in their first week. A number nobody has explained is a number nobody owns.

Why this is written down

Written after the first round of one-to-one conversations, where the same thing came back from several departments: people learned what the company was aiming at months after they joined, and usually by accident.
